The race against energy poverty, an Olympic challenge

As the Olympic fever is still on, we’ve prepared two sporty teasers for you: We think power needs to go to those who have the least, to those who are the “armless archers” in the energy world. It’s not about breaking records. It’s about creating energy services that can compete with conventional ones and that help fighting energy poverty.

A few images shall give you the essence of our POWER UP project, with statements by coordinator Eduardo Blanco from Energy Cities, Claudia Ferre from Fundació València Clima i Energia as well as Biljana Dukovska and Iva Petrunova both fighting vulnerabilities trhough civil society engagement in North Macedonia, notably through the Macedonian Anti-Poverty Platform.

In a second video you can meet some of our European partners such as Gabriele Fregonese (SINLOC), Ben Caussyn (City of Eeklo) and Jan de Pauw (Ecopower). Don’t hesitate to share them!

In Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, a town of 17,000 in eastern Czechia, the POWER UP project is piloting a simple but ambitious idea: install rooftop solar panels on a block of 85 social housing flats and share the electricity directly with the residents. These households are among the 9.2% of Czech citizens estimated to live in energy poverty. This pilot offers them locally produced, low-cost power—and a new way to take part in the energy transition.
